Can Skin Get Too Used To Products?

07.09.2022 | Skincare

"Is This Skincare Still Working?"

We get asked all the time: can skin get so used to the products you’re using that they stop working? And the answer is no! Your skin won’t become immune to your go-to products over time.

So why does it seem like products become less effective? There are a few reasons why this might be the case. We’ll break down the most common reasons we get this question below.

1. You See Fewer Side Effects

As skin gets more accustomed to using a new product, the irritating side effects will lessen over time (think: breakouts when you first start Retinol). That doesn't mean your skin is becoming immune to the product, but rather that it’s better able to tolerate the ingredients without negative side effects.

2. Results Are Slowing Down

Results are often most dramatic at the beginning of product use. People often see a dramatic improvement in their skin concerns when they first start a new product, which can lead to expectations that they will continue to see those results forever. The fact is that after base concerns have been addressed, results might seem less obvious because skin is in a healthier overall state.

3. Environmental Factors

Age, climate, stress, and more can impact how products interact with skin. Pay attention to how your skin is feeling on a regular basis and consider refreshing your routine seasonally and trying treatments for new skin concerns that arise.

4. Harsh Ingredient Combos

Some ingredients work less synergistically together than others. Some combinations might be too harsh or drying when used together, which impacts skin’s health and lessens visible results. Experiment with different ways of mixing and matching your routine and take note of how formulas work together.

5. Inconsistent Usage

On the flip side, you might not be seeing results immediately and wonder if a product is not working from the get-go. When it comes to skincare, consistency is key.  We always recommend sticking to a new routine or product for at least six weeks before you should expect results and keeping up your routine to maintain them.
