Why should I use a moisturizing facial oil?
We recognise our moisturizer as the essential finale of our skincare regime but often overlook the moisturizing facial oil which can add an extra layer of benefits to hydrate, protect and nourish the skin.
So what are the benefits of an oil and do we need it as well as other hydrating products? Hydration can be approached in three key ways: humectants, such as Hyaluronic Acid Serum, draw moisture up from deeper cellular layers; emollients add moisture to the skin as with most moisturizers and occlusives, such as facial oils, create a protective barrier to lock in and prevent moisture being lost at the outer layer of skin. Because each hydrator works at different layers, you can use all or a combination of within a routine depending on your skin type and needs.
Facial oils are a beneficial additional step for those struggling with dryness but, as they lock moisture within the skin, dry skin types or those struggling with dry patches should combine with a humectant and/or moisturizer to provide the moisture the skin is lacking. Similarly, as skin starts to age, we lose more moisture therefore an extra protective layer can help retain more of the water naturally produced by the skin.
Alongside hydration, facial oils can also hold superpowers to target specific skincare concerns such as pigmentation, fine lines and texture issues. The protective armour it creates not only retains moisture but can also protect the skin barrier from damage from environmental stressors such as free radicals, pollution and dirt.
